Amalfi Coast by Road
Latest update: 2 February 2024
If you have a car or if you're able to hire a car then you can really make travel around the Amalfi Coast by Road very simple. The amazing Amalfi Coast Road (the SS163 to give it its rather boring real name!) is one of the most spectacular stretches of road in the world and one of the main reasons why people visit the area.
Wherever you start from in Italy it's easy enough to reach the Amalfi Coast using the national road network. Heading south from Naples you can take the A3 down to Pompeii and then from there turn towards Castellammare di Stabia before following directions to Positano, a drive of just under two hours. |

Many people that visit the Amalfi Coast don't actually base themselves there with the town of Sorrento providing a sensible base with its excellent transport links with the whole region and great selection of hotels.
For people with cars we've produced an Amalfi Coast One Day Itinerary and an Amalfi Coast Two Day Itinerary which aim to help you make the most of the time you have by seeing the most important sights.
