The archaeological sites around Naples are among the most prized in the whole world. They largely tell the story of the Ancient Roman civilisation but we can find other sites that go even further back to the period of Magna Graecia when it was the Greeks that ruled Italy.
Without question the most famous archaeological site in Naples is Pompeii which was left covered in volcanic ash for almost two thousand years after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. Nearby Herculaneum suffered a similar fate and along with Villa Oplontis combine with Pompeii as a UNESCO World Heritage site. |
