Coastal Towns of Campania
Latest update: 29 January 2024
Most of the twenty regions of Italy has an equivalent list to this but the coastal towns of Campania really do stand out from the rest.
When you consider there are three separate coastal areas in the region, one of which is a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, another is perhaps the most popular seaside resort in Italy, and the final one something of a hidden gem stretching for almost 100 kilometres, you can see it's going to take some beating. Sorrento is the first name of the lips for international travellers when they're looking for southern Italian seaside charm. |

The town itself is on the Gulf of Naples and enjoys dreamlike views across to Mount Vesuvius in one direction and the island of Capri in another. Sorrento is the main town of the Sorrento Peninsula where there are another half a dozen or so smaller resorts and fishing villages such as Marina della Lobra.
In a part of the world whose charms know no bounds, we find just a little south of the Sorrento Peninsula, the glorious Amalfi Coast. The famous coastline stretches for around 40 kilometres along the scenic Amalfi Coast Road; a drive along which is one of those things you have to do at least once in your life. While doing so you'll be open-mouthed as you reach Positano which seems to tumble down to the colourful sea in cascades of brightly-coloured buildings, before Amalfi itself comes into view with its beautiful port and historic Cathedral.

Positano and Amalfi are just two of the dozen or so towns along the Amalfi Coast, a list which doesn't even include the famous hill town of Ravello which is just a little way inland. Beyond Amalfi there are smaller resorts such as Atrani (officially the smallest municipality in Italy!), Maiori and Minori. The town of Vietri sul Mare is famous for the production of its ceramics and sits at the eastern boundary of the Amalfi Coast next to the city of Salerno.
Around 40 kilometres south of Salerno you reach Campania's third main coastal area: the Cilento Coast. It's an area of exceptional beauty with the signature seaside town there being Agropoli. The coastal area is characterised by a laid-back lifestyle and sleepy fishing villages like Marina di Camerota and the slightly larger Sapri.
