Villa Jovis
Latest update: 1 February 2024
Constructed in 27 AD, Villa Jovis (House of Jove/Jupiter) was the home of Tiberius during his reign as Roman Emperor. Although these days the ruins show the villa as just a shadow of its former incarnation, the royal palace was once a spectacularly grandiose edifice and the de-facto capital of Rome with the Emperor spending so much of his time there.
There are all sorts of stories about the activities that took place in the palace, many of which centre around the Emperor's supposed sexual proclivities. Among the rumours, it's been suggested that once a lover had satisfied the Emperor's desires, she (or he) would be unceremoniously hurled from the steep cliff at the top of the palace with those unlucky enough to survive the fall itself being impaled upon the spears of servants who would be waiting below. |
