Situated seven kilometres inland from Amalfi, the sleepy town of Scala offers a change in atmosphere from some of the more illustrious towns along the Amalfi Coast.
Scala is reached along a road that winds its way up from Amalfi, a drive of just under half an hour and located across the valley from Ravello. |
With other Amalfi Coast locations providing beaches and craggy coves, Scala is more enjoyed by walkers who take advantage of its well-trodden hiking routes. This is helped by the lower temperatures that make the paths an appealing destination even during the hot summers.

Scala: the quiet hill town overlooking Ravello on the Amalfi Coast
Scala is a village on the Amalfi Coast, located in the hills above Ravello. It is one of the oldest settlements in the region, with origins dating back to the early Middle Ages. The village is surrounded by terraced fields, forests, and walking trails that lead to viewpoints of the coastline.
The Duomo of San Lorenzo, built in the 12th century, has a simple facade and an interior with marble decorations and frescoes. The Church of San Pietro, in a quiet part of the village, has medieval features and a small bell tower. Ruins of old watchtowers and fortifications remain from the time when Scala was part of the Duchy of Amalfi.
Nearby, Ravello has historic villas and a music festival. Amalfi, with its cathedral and harbor, is a short drive away. Hiking trails from Scala lead to the Valle delle Ferriere, a nature reserve with waterfalls and old paper mills.
