How to get to Capri
Latest update: 2 February 2024
In terms of how to get to Capri, with its location at the edge of the Gulf of Naples, it can only be accessed by the sea (unless you can afford a helicopter!).
The nearest big city is Naples but the closest major port on the mainland is Sorrento. The hydrofoil from Naples takes just under an hour while the ferries are a bit slower with a journey time of an hour and 25 minutes. |

Ferries to Capri leave from Porta di Massa, one of the main commercial ports in Naples, while the hydrofoils leave from another port in Naples called Beverello. The hydrofoils are the faster option but some people prefer the ferries as you can sit out on deck, which you can't do with the hydrofoils.
From Naples Airport it takes around half an hour by taxi to get to either of the ports mentioned above, and there's also the option of taking the Alibus to Beverello port. The Alibus starts at the airport, stops at Naples' main train station (Napoli Stazione Centrale), and then moves on to Beverello port. So it's just one or two stops, depending on where you board, and the much cheaper option compared to the taxis.
A taxi from Naples Airport to the port should cost between €20 and €25, depending on the size of your group and how much luggage you have, while the Alibus costs around €4 per person. The journey time of the Alibus by the way is around 40 minutes from the airport to the port, plus any waiting time. At peak times, departures are every 20 minutes.
A large proportion of Capri's visitors take the short hop across from Sorrento which takes just 20 minutes and there are regular crossings throughout the day between the two locations.
During the summer there are further routes available, notably hydrofoil services to and from Positano and Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast as well as Salerno and Castellammare di Stabia. It's also possible to take a day trip from the island of Ischia to Capri.
