Italian Island Regions

The Italian Island Regions consist of two of the 20 official regions of Italy. Sicily is the larger of the two with a population of around five million inhabitants living in an area of 25,711 km².
Sardinia is smaller than Sicily by both measures; only slightly so in terms of its territory of 24,090 km² while its population of around 1.6 million is considerably smaller. Both Sicily and Sardinia are popular holiday destinations which offer similar attributes in many ways. They are both surrounded by a number of smaller islands, both full of history, a rugged interior and long coastlines of dramatic azure water. |

With Sicily having the larger population it follows that it has a greater number of cities and they are among the most vibrant in Italy. In Sardinia's favour are the greater number of beaches that are situated away from larger towns and resorts.
