Scenic Towns of Campania
Latest update: 29 January 2024
The scenic towns of Campania have been divided up into four categories that showcase different aspects of the region's heritage.
Campania occupies a geographical area to the south of Rome that was once part of a civilisation known as Magna Graecia, or "Greater Greece". This was a long time before even the Romans started to march their way around the peninsula, and this serves to demonstrate how much history is concealed in the area. That sense of the past is tangible in the villages and small towns that constitute Campania's Borghi Più Belli d'Italia. |

A borgo, or borghi plural, is usually a hill town or the historic centre of a wider area. Typically, the houses are tightly squeezed together and the communities that live within in them just as closely knit. There's something of a crossover between Campania's most beautiful borghi and two of the other categories listed below. The hill towns of Campania tend to be crafted in the same style as the borghi with defence against neighbouring foes very much the priority when they were built. Italy is peppered with hundreds of these towns and they provide all kinds of spectacular scenery, sometimes seeming precarious with their hillside perches.
One of the Orange Flag Towns of Campania is at once a beautiful borgo and an historic hill town, so Sant'Agata de' Goti could just as easily be on one of the other pages here. The Orange Flag is an award given to towns that meet certain criteria in terms of aesthetics as well as facilities for tourists. Known in Italian as the Bandiera Arancione, it's managed by the Touring Club Italiano association.
Blessed with some of the most dazzling coastal areas in Italy, it's no surprise that the Seaside Towns of Campania rank among the very best in the land. Within its environs, Campania can boast both the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast, with towns such as Positano, Amalfi and Agropoli among the most attractive resorts in Italy.
