Certosa di San Giacomo
Latest update: 1 February 2024
Known locally as the Certosa di San Giacomo, the Charterhouse of St.James offers an interesting diversion away from Capri's amazing scenery, walking routes and beach clubs.
The charterhouse was established in the mid 14th century as a monastery. After a chequered history including the collapse of its watchtower and a medieval stand-off between the resident monks and the islanders, the Certosa di San Giacomo is now one of the principal visitor attractions of Capri. Within its walls you'll find a pharmacy, a church and the Karl Wilhelm Difenbach Museum. There are two beautiful cloisters (Chiostro Grande and Chiostro Piccolo), an art gallery and a wonderful garden where visitors can wander among the fruit trees and local flowers. With its low entrance fee and its close proximity to the Piazzetta, it's a popular stop on most Capri itineraries. |
