Latest update: 31 January 2024
The Piazza del Plebiscito is the main square in Naples city centre and one of the most beautiful in Italy. It's the perfect place from which to start your exploration of the city and an important focal or meeting point for the city's residents.
It covers the area between the centro storico to its north and the Santa Lucia area by the sea to its south. |

Some of Naples' grandest monuments are on display here; at one end of the square is the beautiful Basilica di San Francesco da Paola with its iconic neoclassical facade while directly opposite, across the vast open space is the Royal Palace of Naples. The wonderful Teatro San Carlo is next door to the Royal Palace while across the road from that is the Galleria Umberto I, one of the most unique buildings in the city.
At the northern corner of the square between the busy thoroughfare of Piazza Trieste e Trento and the Royal Palace, is Naples' favourite coffee bar: Gran Caffè Gambrinus. Starting your day there with a wonderfully-strong coffee sets you up perfectly for some sightseeing.
Major sights such as the Castel Nuovo and Castel dell'Ovo are both a pleasant, short walk from here while if you just stand where you are and gaze skywards you'll find a third castle: Castel Sant'Elmo which looks down on to the square.
