Marina Grande
Latest update: 11 August 2024
The name Marina Grande (Big Marina) is often a source of confusion and it's easy to understand why.
The larger of Sorrento's two main marinas is called Marina Piccola (Small Marina) so here I'll explain what you can find in Marina Grande so as to avoid any kind of confusion. This is in fact one of the prettiest corners of Sorrento, almost a community in itself with its own shops, bars and a church (Chiesa di Sant'Anna). |
It's also one of the few places in and around the town centre with a free sandy beach and as such, places are at a premium, especially during peak season. It's also notable for a series of wonderful restaurants where you can sample typical Sorrentine cuisine with fish obviously very much at the heart of that.

Location: Sorrento
Region: Campania Province: Metropolitan City of Naples Close by: Piazza della Vittoria, Villa Comunale Park, Sorrento Lift Walking distance from Piazza Tasso: 11 minutes |
Directions from Piazza Tasso: When facing the sea, walk to your left to the corner of the square where you'll find Bar Ercolano which curves to the left and then almost immediately take the main road that heads down the slight hill towards Piazza Sant'Antonino.
Cross the piazza heading left in a diagonal direction (effectively continuing to follow the main road) which then becomes Via San Francesco. Follow Via San Francesco and you'll shortly see the entrance to the Villa Comunale Park and the Church and Cloisters of San Francesco.
When you reach this point, continue along the main road, ignoring the entrance to the park, until you reach another square, Piazza della Vittoria. Turn right here and then immediately left so that the square (with the statue in the middle) is now on your left and the sea on your right.
At this point you'll be on Via Marina Grande which eventually narrows to a single lane. Keep going until you reach a point when you can only turn left or right. At this point I'd suggest walking up and to your left just a little bit so you can get a great view down on to the marina. Once you've finished there, turn round and go back down the hill and turning left where you'll now arrive at the steps down to the marina.
