The three tiny islands known as Li Galli are situated a small distance out to sea, south of the Sorrento Peninsula in the Gulf of Salerno.
The archipelago has a range of names: Li Galli translates in English as "The Roosters", but they are also known as Le Sirenuse which refers to some interesting folklore around them. |
The largest of the three islands called Gallo Lungo (Long Rooster) is kept company by La Castelluccia (aka Gallo dei Briganti or Bandit's Rooster) and La Rotonda. Since ancient times, the archipelago was said to be the home of three sirens (from where the name Le Sirenuse comes from), called Parthenope, Ligeia and Leucosia. The sirens would ply their evil trade by creating sweet music to attract passing ships which would then be destroyed by crashing into the rocks.

The Li Galli Islands are a small archipelago off the Amalfi Coast between Positano and the island of Capri. Comprising three islets—Gallo Lungo, La Rotonda, and La Castelluccia—these rocky outcrops are surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. The islands are part of a marine reserve, offering a pristine natural environment rich in marine life, making them a paradise for divers and snorkelers.
Steeped in mythology, Li Galli is said to be the home of the Sirens from Homer’s Odyssey, the legendary creatures who lured sailors with their enchanting songs. In more recent history, the largest island, Gallo Lungo was owned by the Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who transformed it into a private retreat. Before him, it was owned by French choreographer Léonide Massine, who built a stunning villa incorporating ancient watchtower ruins.
Although the islands are privately owned, visitors can admire them by boat, often as part of tours from Positano, Sorrento, or Amalfi.
