The grottoes of Capri are some of the island's most enchanting natural wonders, each offering a unique experience.
The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is the most famous, known for its mesmerizing blue light caused by sunlight filtering through the water, creating an ethereal glow. Visitors can enter the grotto by boat, through a small opening, to marvel at the otherworldly atmosphere. It can be reached either from the water or by land and is the most popular visitor destination on the island. |
The Green Grotto (Grotta Verde) is renowned for the emerald green colour of its waters, a result of the sunlight reflecting off the limestone walls. It's slightly less crowded and offers a tranquil experience, with boats gliding through the water, surrounded by the shimmering light.
The White Grotto (Grotta Bianca) is named for the brilliant white stalactites and stalagmites that adorn its interior. It’s accessible by boat, and its dramatic features make it a captivating stop for visitors.
Finally, the Grotto di Matermania is an ancient cave with historical significance, once believed to be a sanctuary for Roman gods. It's different from the other grottoes in so much as it's not on the sea but can be reached from the Pizzolungo hiking route.
