Villa San Michele and Axel Munthe Museum
Latest update: 21 June 2024
Villa San Michele is one of the best preserved villas in Capri. At the end of the nineteenth century a Swedish doctor and writer, Axel Munthe, heard about Capri during a period he spent on the French Riviera for a treatment for his lungs.
He found on a cliff a medieval chapel called San Michele and fell in love with the panoramic views, amongst the most impressive on Capri. From that moment on he decided to restore it, including the adjacent parts of the property including an abandoned Roman villa, and a vineyard. The Villa, that leads also to a museum, can be reached by bus from Marina Grande or from the Piazzetta. In the summer, concerts and events are organised in the gardens of the villa, a wonderful place to stroll around and enjoy the beautiful flowers and views. |
