Things to see in Campania
Latest update: 29 January 2024
The scale of things to see in Campania rivals that of any of the other 19 regions of Italy. Within its confines lie such treasures as the Amalfi Coast, the islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida, the city of Naples, world-famous archaeological sites such as Pompeii, Paestum and Herculaneum, the Cilento Coast and national park as well as the popular seaside town of Sorrento.
Campania is one of the twenty official regions of Italy and its capital is Naples. Once one of the biggest cities in the world, Naples is a beguiling mix of historic and modern cultures, with many of its best treasures hidden beneath the surface. |

It's the noisiest, most vivacious city in the country with an inimitable style and home of course to the pizza which carries an almost religious importance to Neapolitans. From Naples it's just a short hop across the sea to any of the three wonderful islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida. Each island has its own character; Ischia is renowned for its beaches and the iconic Castello Aragonese, while Capri is the home of chic with designer shops and beautiful scenery in every direction. Procida is by far the sleepiest of the three islands but can boast one of the prettiest sights in southern Italy; the multi-coloured Marina Corricella.
Heading further south from Naples, beyond Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, you reach the port city of Salerno. The city is the capital of Salerno Province within which you'll find the UNESCO World Heritage listed archaeological park of Paestum with its Greek temples while in the towns nearby you can visit a living, breathing Buffalo Mozzarella ranch and see first hand how the delicious cheese is made.
To the north of Naples is the Province of Caserta and there's no doubting the main sight here. The Royal Palace of Caserta is another of Campania's UNESCO sites and has one of the most extraordinary gardens in the world; the scale of which has to be seen to be believed.
There's much, much more to Campania than the places I've listed above and a good first port of call to understand the region would be the Must-See Campania page which details the top sights. You can also use the menu options at the top of each page to discover new places and work out exactly where you'd like to spend your time here when you visit.
